Fifa World Cup 2022

While we are huge fans of all kinds of sports, the footy really does have a special place in our hearts and that’s why the FIFA World Cup is an event we look forward to with keen interest. Of course we like to support our national team, but it is also excellent to see other nations put their best foot forward and show the world what they are made of.

It’s not uncommon for the FIFA president to make a comment on the quality of the competition, and this year was no different. FIFA president Gianni Infantino predicted that 2022 would be the best competition ever, and while this is a bold claim it turns out he wasn’t mistaken despite the controversies that plagued the tournament from the offset.

Despite this, the performances we were treated to throughout the competition were stellar and made the World Cup of 2022 a real treat for football fans and sports lovers all over the globe. There was plenty to keep us all on our toes, from some shocks in the group stages to unexpected results in the knockout stages.

This is before we’ve even gotten to the final, of course, which saw Argentina fight it out against France to claim a riveting victory following a truly nail biting round of penalties with the reigning champions. Lionel Messi was finally able to raise the trophy with his team mates, and was understandably overjoyed and proud of their achievement.

England’s performance at the World Cup 2022

We have come to expect brilliant performances from the England squad whenever they play, and the early stages looked incredibly promising after coming out on top following a 3-0 win over Senegal. It’s during this game that Harry Kane was able to score his 53rd goal while playing for England which brings him in line with Wayne Rooney’s record.

Following this thrilling game, England were set to face a confident French side at the semi-finals. Despite a solid performance, the England squad were not quite able to gain an advantage over Les Blues, resulting in a 2-0 win for France. It’s always sad to see our side miss out on the trophy but their performance has been highly commendable, and we couldn’t be more proud.

Celebrating the past and looking forward to the future

You may not know it, but England’s historic win in 1966 was called by referee Gottfried Dienst using an ACME Thunderer. This is one of our favourite moments from sporting history among many, and we are proud to have played even a small part in such an iconic moment. In the decades following England’s World Cup triumph the original Thunderer that blew the victory back then became hard to pin down.

It wasn’t until 2014 when we received an unexpected message from a man named Klaus Kammerling that the story began to unfold. As fate would have it, Mr Kammerling’s grandfather was given the original ACME Thunderer from the 1966 World Cup final by referee Gottfried Dienst. Mr Kammerling’s grandfather passed away in 1979 and the whistle sadly went forgotten for decades.

It wasn’t until a clearout was taking place in the cellar of Mr Kammerling’s parents’ home in Switzerland that the whistle was rediscovered in a cupboard. The moment the family saw the whistle they knew exactly what they were looking at, prompting Mr Kammerling to reach out to us and send us a photo of this fantastic piece of history.

Looking back it is always exciting to see how far we’ve come, both as a British manufacturer and a supporter of the sporting world. We are proud to be involved in a huge range of sports at local and international levels and our gorgeously crafted whistles are a staple among clubs and school teams all over the world. Our support and involvement doesn’t stop there, and we have plenty of exciting things planned for the future. Find out more about our iconic whistles today.
