ACME: More than just whistles

There can be no doubt that whistles are at the heart of everything we do here at ACME Whistles, and the biggest clue is in the name. Company founder Joseph Hudson was an inventor with a curious and driven mind, but whistles were not his first interest.

When he noticed a need for whistles that could cut through the hubbub of Victorian city streets, docks and railway stations, he was able to use his knack for innovation to engineer whistles that caused a revolution in their own right.

After finding this niche in the market and applying his natural talents, Hudson was able to start his own company manufacturing whistles in the heart of Birmingham in 1870. It was within his company that Hudson was able to produce some of the most iconic and enduring whistle designs in the world.

Unfortunately, being an industry-leading company always comes with the risk that cheap copycat products will enter the market, and this is certainly true of ACME Whistles. The truth is, a cheap copycat whistle can never match the skillful engineering and exceptional quality of a genuine ACME whistle.

Our core range

The core range of whistles produced in our Birmingham factory features versatile ACME originals that have unlimited applications. Perhaps our most famous whistle is the Thunderer which is made to various specifications. Other iconic whistles in our core range include the Metropolitan Police whistle, our well loved dog whistles, and our sports whistles.

These whistles are all made using traditional techniques because this gives us the greatest amount of control over the quality of every single unit. You can be assured that every ACME whistle will work perfectly from the very first blow because they are tested individually to guarantee great performance.

Other innovative products by ACME

Though whistles will always be our bread and butter, there are several other innovative products that form part of our complete range. Perhaps the most important item we make that is not a whistle is the ACME Clicker 470. Also known as the Cricket, the ACME Clicker has its roots in military history as it was originally produced as a means of communication for paratroopers taking part in the D-Day landings at Normandy.

Though simple in its design, the Clicker was an extremely effective and important piece of equipment that helped to keep the paras safe behind enemy lines. To find out more about the historical significance of the ACME Clicker, explore our campaign to recover the lost Clickers of D-Day.

Whistles are more than a simple practical tool and in fact they are commonly used in musical contexts. Our musical whistles, warblers and calls are popularly used by orchestras, music therapists and schools to create a range of sounds. From samba to special effects, our diverse whistles can be used to create just the right kind of cacophony.
