A brief introduction to positive dog training
As a nation of animal lovers and dog owners, it’s no surprise that dog ownership is on the rise in the UK. From Labradors to Lhasa Apsos, dogs come in all shapes and sizes. Whether we have a miniature lap dog, or one of the larger breeds, it is our responsibility to provide a good level of training. By ensuring that every dog in our care is trained well and is able to behave well in the home and when out and about, we can help them become the best companions for our families.
Certain breeds of dogs have a reputation for being more difficult to train than others. While this can be true in some cases, the vast majority of dogs can be trained perfectly well once you have found the tools and techniques that work for them. For a good number of years now, dog training and behavioural experts have shown a strong preference for positive reinforcement techniques because they give the best results and help create happy, well socialised dogs.
The benefits of positive reinforcement
Positive reinforcement, in a nutshell, is all about rewarding good behaviours to encourage your dog to repeat those behaviours throughout their life. The key to dealing with poor behaviour is to offer gentle corrections, and to be patient with your dog. This way, you can be ready and waiting with praise and a treat when they perform the behaviour you are looking for.
It works by withholding something your dog wants until they demonstrate the correct behaviour, and this can be treats, attention, or their favourite toy. You will need to choose a way to mark the good behaviour such as a clicker or a word of praise, and will need to decide on how you’ll deliver commands; usually verbally or using a tool such as a silent dog whistle. The benefits of this training style are clear:
- Build a strong bond with your dog, based on trust
- Reduce anxiety and depression in the dog
- Provides them with a good mental workout
- Easy and consistent method that your whole family can use
- Builds confidence in dog and owner
Dog training whistles
One of the most versatile and useful dog training tools you can buy is the dog whistle. Ours are engineered to give you a reliable and effective way to communicate with your dog through sound that works over long distances. Our silent dog whistle is a classic dog training tool that is loved by people from all walks of life, and while it is not completely ‘silent’ most dog owners find it less intrusive than other types of whistle, though no less effective.
Something that we love about our silent dog whistles is that they are adjustable so you can find the specific pitch that works best for you and your dog. It is also made from beautiful, high quality metal so it’s as durable as it is good looking. If you prefer a plastic dog training whistle with a fixed pitch and tone, our most popular options are the ACME Pro Trialler 212, the ACME Dog Whistle 211 ½ and the ACME Dog Whistle 210.
All of the dog training whistles mentioned in this article work extremely well with our dog training whistle lanyard. If you prefer a dog whistle strap that can be worn around the wrist then you’ll be pleased to know we provide these. If you prefer a more traditional dog training whistle neck lanyard we have several different styles including a classic leather dog whistle lanyard, an option with a breakaway mechanism, and fixed or sliding dog whistle lanyards.
