Whistles in Popular Culture and the Media

In the vast and ever-growing world of media and popular culture, the humble whistle has long had a place in the production of content. From radio shows to sound effects for music and TV, the sound of the whistle can be heard in all kinds of media, though it is often overlooked despite how ubiquitous it is.
The whistle is generally thought of as a tool, something that is used predominantly for utilitarian purposes, though they are also used extensively for musical applications too. As a whistle manufacturer with a long and celebrated history, our whistles have been used for some interesting and unique purposes over the years.
The ACME Slide Whistle
While it is one of our lesser known whistle designs, most people will definitely recognise the musical tones of the ACME Slide Whistle from pop culture and the media. They were famously used as a voice in The Clangers, a beloved British children’s TV programme that first aired in the late 1960s and was revived in 2015.
The Slide Whistle also features in Radio 4’s I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue and was also used in the earlier episodes of classic animated TV show The Simpsons. As well as being used extensively in TV and film, this unique whistle also has a place in music, featuring in songs by Louis Armstrong, Pink Floyd and Vernon Burch.
ACME Samba Carnival Whistle
Capable of producing loud or soft sounds and boasting a variable pitch, our Samba Carnival whistle is one of the most versatile and expressive whistles we make. It is a quintessential sound of samba music and is often used during musical performances, carnivals and festivals to produce infectious rhythms and musical accents. Lightweight yet durable, it is available in a metal or plastic format to suit your needs and is a real pop culture classic.
Boatswain's Whistle
If you have ever watched a film that involves navies and other maritime themes then you have more than likely heard the soaring call of the boatswain’s whistle. Sometimes phonetically called the bosun’s whistle, these are used to this day in real naval situations as well as being used to produce an unmistakable sound of maritime life. Another famous use of the boatswain’s pipe is in the sci-fi classic Star Trek where it is used by commanding officers to communicate with the crew.
Cuckoo Call
An uncommon but well loved sign of spring, the cuckoo spends its winters in Africa before migrating to Europe and parts of Asia in the early spring. We have been able to capture the essence of this beautiful bird’s haunting call and faithfully replicate it with our Cuckoo Call whistle. This iconic sound is used in the 1912 tone poem, Frederick Delius’ On Hearing the First Cuckoo of Spring and is an integral part of the Toy Symphony alongside the nightingale and quail calls.
The ACME Thunderer
Perhaps the most well known whistle in pop culture and the media is the ACME Thunderer. It is one of our oldest and most popular designs and remains so to this day. If you have ever watched a game of football, whether a local club match or the World Cup finals, you will have heard this famous whistle in action. In fact, it was an ACME Thunderer that signalled England’s win at the 1966 FIFA World Cup!
