Celebrating success at the Women’s Rugby World Cup

We may currently be in the midst of the Fifa World Cup and this is deservedly taking up a lot of focus in the sporting world at the moment. Here at ACME Whistles, we feel it is worth taking a moment to reflect on and celebrate the successes and progress made throughout the Women’s Rugby World Cup of 2023. England’s Red Roses are truly a formidable force as they have demonstrated time and time again on the playing field.

It isn’t often that England’s teams are given the chance to truly shine, but this year has seen some incredible performances from the Lionesses at the Women’s Euros and then at the Women’s Rugby World Cup by the Red Roses. With such a lot of world class talent on show it’s no wonder that interest in women’s sport has skyrocketed this year and this momentum is expected to have a knock on effect for women and girls in sport in the coming years.

A bright future for the sport

It is truly remarkable to think that the England team’s victory over Canada at the semi-finals was the culmination of a 30 match winning streak which is a record-breaking total for both men’s and women’s rugby. Though the Red Roses narrowly lost out on the trophy, the New Zealand side fought hard for their win and both teams put on an excellent show for fans of the sport from all over the world.

The England team’s performance at the Women’s Rugby World Cup is managing to generate a lot of interest and excitement because in less than three years’ time we will be hosting the Cup here in England. A world cup win on our own soil would be such a wonderful thing for English sports fans and would encourage women and girls (men and boys too!) to consider getting involved. This level of interest will bring more investment in rugby and help cement the team’s place in history.

For starters, Sports England has invested £70 million into rugby infrastructure over the last decade and it is hoped that there will be more than 100,000 women and girls playing the sport in England by 2027. This is more than double the number of players today, and it is going to be exciting to see how the sport develops in the coming years with such an increase in interest and investment.

ACME Whistles and English rugby

It is no secret that ACME Whistles has long been involved with the sport of rugby. Our whistles are a popular piece of equipment for rugby coaches and referees all over the country and they are also used by many international teams too. The whistle of choice for rugby coaches and referees is the ACME Thunderer 558 which is a large-bodied plastic version of this classic whistle that is shatterproof and has a distinctly deep call.

Our connection with rugby runs much deeper than providing iconic sports whistles, though, and we are also beyond proud to support and partner with The Rugby Football League to train more rugby referees. It is initiatives like this, and those being fronted by Sport England and the Rugby Football Union, that are helping to drive excellence in the sport today.

From after school clubs, to local women’s teams, to training as a coach or referee, there are many ways to get involved with English rugby on a local or national level. If you are looking for a new way to challenge yourself, or are interested in getting your kids into an engaging new sport then rugby should definitely be high on your list.
