Owning a dog comes with a high level of responsibility whether you have a miniature breed or a giant. From an early age, every dog needs to undergo a socialisation process to get them used to the sights, sounds and smells of everyday life and to help them learn how to become good citizens. There are some commands that are seen as vital for every dog to know, such as sit, stay, and down. One of the most important but often overlooked skills that a dog needs to learn is recall.
Even if you never intend to allow your dog free reign off-lead, there is always a chance that your dog may one day slip their lead or otherwise get away from you, and you will need to know that you can reliably get them back if this happens. This is where strong recall conditioning is vital. One of the best ways to instil good recall in your dog is to use a dog training whistle as a tool for communication.
It is entirely possible that you can train recall using your voice, but there are proven benefits to using a whistle

As a nation of animal lovers and dog owners, it’s no surprise that dog ownership is on the rise in the UK. From Labradors to Lhasa Apsos, dogs come in all shapes and sizes. Whether we have a miniature lap dog, or one of the larger breeds, it is our responsibility to provide a good level of training. By ensuring that every dog in our care is trained well and is able to behave well in the home and when out and about, we can help them become the best companions for our families.
Certain breeds of dogs have a reputation for being more difficult to train than others. While this can be true in some cases, the vast majority of dogs can be trained perfectly well once you have found the tools and techniques that work for them. For a good number of years now, dog training and behavioural experts have shown a strong preference for positive reinforcement techniques because they give the best results and help create happy, well socialised dogs.

Training your dog properly is an important part of owning and looking after a dog. By making sure your dog, whatever the breed, knows what is expected of them in terms of behaviour is the best way to ensure their and your safety, and the safety of other people and animals you may encounter in your day to day lives.
There are several basic commands that every dog should know, no matter their age or size, including sit, lie down, stay, come and wait. These basic commands are more about safety than anything else, and will help to ensure your dog is properly under your control at all times. Most people like to get these out of the way early on before teaching the more fun tricks such as give paw, roll over, and beg.
As a dog owner the chances are you use a whistle to facilitate their training, or have at least considered using one. They are a fantastically versatile tool that makes it easy to communicate with your dog clearly and over long distances, and the best part is that because dogs have

Working dogs can make excellent pets, but they have slightly different and more demanding needs compared to dogs bred for companionship. Working dog breeds thrive when they have a job to do; all dogs were specifically bred to do a particular job at one point or another. Labradors were bred for retrieving fish, Jack Russels were bred for hunting rodents, and Cocker Spaniels were bred to flush out prey and retrieve it during a hunt.
Several of these breeds of dogs now live happily as pets since they no longer need to perform their duties. The working traits of many dogs have been diluted through breeding, and they are no longer considered working dogs. However, If you have chosen to adopt or buy a specific working dog from a breeder, they will come from a long line of working dogs, specifically bred for traits that allow them to do their job well. In this article, we take you through a few helpful tips you can use to train your working dog breed.

Welcoming a new puppy or rescue dog into your home is an exciting - and often quite hectic - time for all the family. There’s the inevitable naming debate to contend with as well as critical decisions to make; including whether they will be allowed on the couch, whether to crate train, and tha daily schedule for feeding and walks. There’s also quite a bit of stuff you’ll need to buy in advance to prepare their new home for them before they arrive.
Beyond this, you’ll need to make sure everyone in the family understands the ground rules because this will make training so much easier. Puppies need consistency to learn how to behave correctly, and if one of you is going against the rules and feeding the pup scraps from the table or letting them on the couch when no one else is looking, then your hard work can quickly be undone.

My name is Colton Thompson. I own and operate Thompson Working Dogs here in the states. From the infancy of my time as a handler and gundog trainer, I have had an ACME whistle. The UK methods of training resonated with me early on. The common sense and straight forward approach just made sense to me. Most importantly the dogs. As I poured my time into researching the methodology, I started gathering every piece of training equipment the winners were using. I noticed one commonality. An ACME whistle. “If it is good enough for them...” was my mentality. An ACME 211.5 TM was bought and it was history ever since

Fast forward to today, I fancy the 211.5 TM whistle, along with the 212 Pro Trialler. I use the 211.5 TM for up-close training exercises. With its mellow tone and ability to produce sound at a low volume, it is a staple in my puppy training and started gundog work. As I work to longer distances, I switch to the 212 to maintain meaningfulness in my commands.

Choosing the perfect dog whistle for your family pet or working dog is key to facilitating smooth training. Like with people, no two dogs are exactly alike and this can make it somewhat challenging to choose the right whistle to train with. Of course, the level your dog is trained to and the speed at which they make progress will depend on the amount of time that you invest in training as well as the aptitude of your dog, but choosing the right tools will give you both a great start. There are a number of things which will help you to choose the right whistle the first time, including the breed of dog and the kind of work you will be doing with them.
Retrievers
Retrieving breeds such as goldens, labradors and curly coats are generally energetic and sociable, and most will benefit from being able to run in large open spaces, especially young dogs. Whether your retriever is a working dog or a family pet you will need a whistle which can be heard over long distances so you can reliably recall

We are so delighted to be collaborating with ACME Whistles! As champions of British manufacturing and huge fans of waggy tails we were intrigued by the ‘silent’ dog whistle….
Teddy Maximus is all about fun, luxury British style, we create beautiful accessories for you and your dog… you might have seen us in the Sunday Times Style mag recently, or perhaps you’ve spotted a pup travelling in style in one of our dog carriers – it certainly is a dog’s life! Inspired by my dachshund Teddy, the brand was born in 2015 and is now loved by dogs and their owners across the world!
We first met ACME Whistles in Florida at the Global Pet Expo and connected over our passion for British craftsmanship – we were immediately drawn to the heritage and quality of the products, resulting in our beautiful new Keyring Charm designed and made in the UK for stylish dog owners.
The ‘silent’ dog whistle is fascinating! There are so many things we love about it! We were amazed to learn that the sound of the ‘silent’
